ACT is a Hand Up, Not a Hand Out

Family Self-Sufficiency Plan : The first step for each participant family of ACT is the creation of a family self-sufficiency plan. Each individualized plan includes the family's goals and the process by which they will achieve them with ACT's support. So long as the family will commit to, and carry out all of the elements in the plan, ACT will be there for them every step of the way.

Planning and Preparation: ACT employment specialists' help participants develop individualized employment assessment plans, giving participants a clear picture as to their background, strengths, and areas that they can improve upon or skills that would be helpful to learn. Specialists then work with participants step by step to achieve those goals. When job seekers don't know what they'd like to do, Great Oaks offers them a skills inventory and personality profile to help them find their most suitable career choice.

Job Search Assistance : ACT's Employment Specialists teach the finer points of conducting a job search, giving participants an edge in the job market. Participants are taught how to craft a resume, what to say and wear in a job interview, how to follow-up with employers and how to navigate various avenues for opportunities.

Job Retention Services : With a focus on keeping participants employed even after exiting our program, we give guidance upon completion of self-sufficiency plans, ensuring that nothing gets in their way to maintaining stable employment.

Budgeting Education : Balancing a budget is difficult, especially when expenses outweigh funds. Our budget specialists give participants the skills to manage the money they have, and also some very simple ways to save money. Through classes and one-on-one training, we teach the skills and knowledge needed to avoid long-term debt

Children's Education Center : While adult ACT participants take part in our on-site programs (including evening and weekend classes), their children are cared for in our interactive Education Center where they're exposed to many activities.

Counseling Services : Should participants have psychological or emotional needs throughout the course of their self-sufficiency plan, they can meet with one of our staff psychologists for help in dealing with issues that may be standing in the way to their family's stability.

General Education Development (GED) : For many, the first step to continued education and better employment opportunities is the GED. ACT provides our participants with preparation training for the GED test, giving them the confidence to succeed.

Monthly "Parent Club" : Once a month, we offer support groups and focused discussions for parents while their children enjoy crafts, story-time and numerous other fun activities. Dinner is provided to families.

Computer Learning Center : Equipped with 16 computer workstations, printers and scanners, ACT participants can learn basic computer skills through hands on instruction, tutorials and classes

VISIONS Community Services (VCS) is a non-profit organization located in the West End of Cincinnati which serves young parents and their children from economically disadvantaged neighborhoods. VISIONS provides a unique blend of services to parents and children. We assist teen & young mothers & fathers to obtain their high school diploma, GED, pursue post secondary education and enroll in job training. Our early childhood education center provides a safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate environment while preparing children to succeed in kindergarten. Our philosophy is that education is the most effective way to escape poverty.

Mission Statement

VISIONS Community Services is a community-based organization committed to breaking the cycle of poverty by providing human services that strengthen families and promote self-sufficiency. Our interactions with the families we serve, our volunteers, funders and community partners will reflect our core values of caring, respect, integrity and a commitment to excellence in all we do.
